SIMA announces new dates for SIMA Surf Summit 2009

The Surf Industry Manufacturers Association (SIMA) is pleased to announce the new dates for Surf Summit 12: September 30 – October 3, 2009 at the Crowne Plaza Resort Los Cabos in San Jose del Cabo, Mexico.

After postponing the original May dates due to concern about the swine flu, SIMA is proud to be continuing the tradition of uniting the tribe in Cabo for the 12th annual SIMA Surf Summit.

"SIMA's new Surf Summit 12 dates reflect the surf industry leadership's strong consensus that we need an annual gathering of people and ideas, be it May or September,” said Doug Palladini, SIMA president. “We know that attending will remain a priority for all SIMA members given the need for increased business acumen and communication in these challenging economic times.”

The event activities will follow the same schedule as previously announced, including favorites such as the Retailer Appreciation Night, Cabo Crawl and the TransWorld SURFari. The winners of the SIMA Image Awards will also be announced during a ceremony in the sand on Friday, October 2, 2009.

The line-up of original speakers will change slightly and a finalized list of speakers will be released in the coming weeks. Attendees will enjoy the same educational benefits, networking and social surfing time as the successful years before.

All attendees that registered for the May Surf Summit dates have been contacted directly and have the option to either roll their registration into these new dates or be issued a refund if they are now unable to attend. For currently registered attendees wishing to roll their registration into the new dates or receive a refund, an Attendance Confirmation Form has been sent and MUST be completed and returned to the SIMA office by Friday, July 31, 2009.

Registration is now open to all SIMA members and surf retailers that were not previously registered for the event in May and can now attend during the new dates. Registration for non-SIMA members and non-surf retailers is by invitation only. The deadline to register is Friday, July 31, 2009.

This year SIMA Surf Summit will be at a new venue – the Crowne Plaza Resort Los Cabos cploscabos.com. The all-inclusive, beachside resort is located closer than in years past to all the hot surf spots, including East Cape, which is just 40-minutes away. With all rooms boasting an ocean view, two colossal pools, and as much great food as you can eat, the Crowne Plaza Resort Los Cabos will provide an epic experience all while allowing for a more affordable registration fee for attendees. The more than accommodating venue will set the stage for four days of networking, informative seminars and surfing.

For more Surf Summit 12 information, please visit sima.com/surfsummit.aspx. For registration materials or sponsorship opportunities, please contact Shannon Park, SIMA Event Manager, at Shannon@sima.com or 949.366.1164 x2.

Local Support Wakeboard Challenge in Paderborn

Hawaiian Islands Vintage Surf Auction offers sneak peek

Little more than six weeks remain before the Hawaiian Islands Vintage Surf Auction, presented by Quiksilver, rolls out at the Blaisdell Center in Honolulu, July 17 & 18, and bidders are already scrutinizing auction lots online.

Curator Randy Rarick has released an eclectic mix of 18 sneak peek items under his "Peek of the Week" selections that can be viewed online .

Among those already revealed:

Fred Hemmings art

This is one of five items from the James Arness Colection. This particular piece hung in Jim's dressing room at the CBS studio while he was filming "Gunsmoke". Because he liked Makaha so much, photographer, Dr. Don James, had given Arness the original negative from this famous shot of Fred Hemmings shooting the Makaha "Bowl".

Arness then had his studio artist paint this fantastic, huge 5' X 9' plywood backed rendition. Unfortunately, as luck would have it, the artist ruined the negative while he was painting the piece and Jim always felt bad about never being able to return the slide. The picture then hung in his Hollister Ranch house after leaving "Gunsmoke". Superb original condition oil painting, shown here with Fred Hemmings himself!. Photo courtesy Dana Edmunds.

General Veneer Hollow Wood

This is one of the very popular early wood boards that were the equivalent of the modern boogie board. Built using a hollow construction tecnique, they were very popular for body boarding because of their light weight and built in handles. Made of mahagony plywood and varnished, this particular board features the "Aloha" state seal of Hawaii water-slide decal. All orignial condition.

Hurley Pro 2009

The Hurley Pro at Lower Trestles, California is the only ASP World Tour stop to go down on mainland USA.

Kelly Slater took his 34th career win at Lower Trestles back in 2007, breaking Tom Curren’s previous record. Some say this place flatters the most average of surfer, but when the best guys in the world rock up to tear the waves apart, flattery will not be getting anyone anywhere. This is the most attackable wave on the planet.

Andy Irons took the first ASP World Tour event to be held here back in 2000. The USA’s Kelly Slater has since taken three wins here, clearing up in the last two years. After a shaky start at the beginning of this year, he will be looking to reaffirm his position as the greatest surfer of all time, and what better place to do it than on home surf.

As we approach the business end of the season, competition will be hot. The consistent waves at Trestles will be pounded by the fins of the world’s best. Tune in for the latest video highlights and you will not be disappointed.

Hurley US Open of Surfing 2009

What's the closest thing to watching the world's best surfers compete in a full-on stadium atmosphere? Look no further than Huntington Beach in July, when up to 500,000 people will find their way to the real Surf City, post up in the sand and cheer on their heroes at the Pier. It's been that way for 50 years now, starting with the US Championships in 1959 and evolving to today: the Hurley US Open of Surfing.

As the new title sponsor of this storied event, Hurley and its partners intend to make it a life-changing experience from dawn to dusk: Late-afternoon concerts. Hurley's Walk the Walk fashion competition. Elite-level BMX courtesy of Nike 6.0. The best skateboarders courtesy of Converse and Red Bull. And a swarm of activity, demonstrations and booths surrounding our "50 Years at the Pier" celebration.

Of course, center stage will be reserved for the ocean, where both men and women will be competing for points, prize money and HB glory in the title event, the Hurley US Open of Surfing. As a six-star ASP qualifier at the mid-way point in the season, the winner here often goes on to the coveted Dream Tour. Case in point: last year's US Open Men's Champ Nathaniel Curran, who ended up winning the 2008 World Qualifying Series and is now a rookie in the elite Top 45. Along with the six-star, Nike 6.0 will be holding an ASP Pro Junior event another important challenge on the path to become the 20-and-under world junior champion. Rounding out the center stage will be a celebration of the world's top longboarders in a soon-to-be announced format that will certainly have the crowd cheering for more.

In addition to all of this, the Hurley US Open, in conjunction with the World Professional Surfers athlete union, will be introducing the first-ever WPS All Stars event. This will include participation from 10 of the world's best surfers voted on by you the fans. They will surf in the event, sign autographs and blow us away in a special-format expression session that must be seen to be believed.

This isn't just the closest thing to a stadium; it is a stadium. The only place to witness a gathering of the world's most talented action sports stars all in one stretch of sand. As local favorite Brett Simpson says, "Competing in the US Open is one event I look forward to all year theres no other event like it, really. The crowds, the activity, the excitement it's like you have no choice but to perform at your very best."

Featuring the world’s best and most progressive surfers from ASP Junior World Pro Junior Series, the Pier Pressure provides a vital stepping-stone to the World Qualifying Series (WQS) and the World Championship Tour (WCT).

Offering an opportunity to earn maximum points toward the 2010 Billabong World Junior Championships, the Nike 6.0 Pier Pressure draw pits top-rated Junior competitors from around the world against the highest rated North Americans. Qualifying through their results at the 2009 Billabong World Juniors, up to six of the highest rated surfers from Australia, Japan, Africa, Europe, South America and Hawaii will receive seeds into the event to compete against the field of North Americans. All the American surfers have been seeded into the events based on their ASP North America Junior Grade results from last year.

2008 Winner’s Podium

The Nike 6.0 Pier Pressure offers a $20,000 prize purse to competitors this year who were 19 years of age or under as of January 1, 2009.
The ASP Junior Grade Series is a global tour that offers an important competitive arena for emerging professional surfers interested in developing their competitive skills. The Junior Tour culminates each year with the Billabong World Junior Championships, where the top five surfers from each ASP region compete for the World Junior Title. Past winners include Andy Irons, Joel Parkinson and Adriano de Souza. This year, there are 10 scheduled North American events for domestic competitors to accumulate qualification points. And while this increase from previous year’s schedule presents the surfers with greater opportunities to accumulate those points, an intense competitive draw, makes it crucial for each to perform at their peak in every heat. Three-quarters of their results will count towards their overall year-end standing, with the top five surfers receiving a seed into the Billabong World Junior Championships. The Nike 6.0 Pier Pressure will provide opportunities for North Americans to earn these coveted qualifying points and international surfers a shot at the money.

If you can’t make it down to the celebration make sure you watch the live webcast June 28th and 29th.

Hawaiian Islands Vintage Surf Auction launches in July

The vault of surf collectibles for the Hawaiian Islands Vintage Surf Auction, presented by Quiksilver Premium is ready for auction. A stunning collection has been amassed, and is set to go under the hammer at the Blaisdell Center, Honolulu, on July 17 & 18, 2009.

Event producer Randy Rarick has been tracking down leads from as far away as Rio de Janeiro, Brazil; the Gold Coast of Australia; the shores of Lima, Peru; the coasts of the Americas; and, of course, right here in his backyard of the Hawaiian Islands.

Beyond wood surfboards from the early 20th century, Rarick has uncovered hollow Blake paddleboards from the '30s, laminated wood boards of the '40s, classic balsas from the '50s, North Shore guns of the '60s, and pro boards from the '70s and '80s. New items continue to flow in.

"The response to the call for consignment items has been phenomenal", noted Rarick.

One of the best collections has come from none other than James Arness of 'Marshall Dillon' fame from the "Gunsmoke" TV series of the '60s. The father of 1970 World Surfing Champion Rolf Arness, James and his family spent winters on the west side at Makaha for close to a decade.

The list of items from the Arness collection includes a 1940's Pete Peterson paddleboard; a 1950 Bob Simmons balsa board; a 13-foot Surfboards Hawaii Dick Brewer Makaha Point gun from the early '60s; and a 12-foot version of son Rolf's Bing Maui Foil. There's also a studio artist rendition of Fred Hemmings' famous ride from the Don James photo at the Makaha Bowl.

"To say the least, these five items alone could make up the auction itself, yet they represent only five per cent of the total items that will be up for bid," said Rarick. Surf decals, posters, art work, and a variety of printed material dating from the missionary era right up to the heyday golden '60s will be available.

A fun grouping of silent auction items will also be available offering low priced deals in addition to the high-end quality items.

Last Call for Consignment Items:

Auction staff are still on the hunt for consignment items. Ninety per cent of the sale price of items will go back to the owners. The remaining 10% will be allocated to the auction's beneficiaries that include: the Outrigger Duke Kahanamoku Foundation; the Surfrider Foundation; and the Surfing Heritage Foundation. So, if you have any old surf treasures in the attic, under your house or stashed away in the garage, pull them out and see if they're worth consigning to the auction and a good cause. This is the last call for consignment items.

The final list of items selected from those submitted will be announced mid-May. Feature items that have already made the cut are currently being shown on the popular "Peek of the Week" at hawaiiansurfauction.com which features a new item each Monday right up until auction day. Free Appraisals In Person, or on the Internet:

Even if you don't want to sell it, if you are in Honolulu bring your surf collectible along for a free valuation at the Antiques Roadshow-style appraisal that will take place on day one - July 17th. A panel of six expert appraisers will be on hand to let you know what your item is worth. If you can't make it to Hawaii, go online at: hawaiiansurfauction.com and event staff will give you a free appraisal over the internet. The auction will also be streamed live on the internet.

Pre-Registration Opens to Bidders May 1st: Pre-registration will commence May 1st for those planning to attend in person and those who want to lodge Absentee Proxy Bids. Please go to: hawaiiansurfauction.com for complete registration and auction information.

Over the past four auctions more than $1,500,000 of the finest vintage surfboards and surf memorabilia have changed hands and over $75,000 has been donated to various charitable causes and foundations.

DETAILS:

Friday July 17: Viewing from noon to 6pm, including Antiques Roadshow-style appraisals.

Saturday July 18: Doors open for viewing at 10am. Silent auction 2:00-4:30pm. Main Auction 5-9pm.

Free viewing. Bidders must purchase a bidding number.

RED BULL X FIGHTERS USA 2009

Hold onto your hats, Red Bull X Fighters is coming to town! After staying true to the motto "Everything's Bigger in Texas" in 2008 with a brilliant aerial rodeo show set on a massive course, the world's best FMX riders are set to return to the Wild West with guns blazing for a high-octane showdown after the scorching sun sets on Saturday, June 27.

Last year saw Jeremy Stenberg (USA) battle it out in a spectacular final with Mat Rebeaud (SUI) in front of a sold out crowd of 20,000 fans at the Historic Forth Worth Stockyards. But Stendberg had to concede defeat to the Swiss star, who pulled an incredible Superman Backflip Indie over the 120-foot gap and claimed his first-ever win on American soil. Rebeaud dominated the Series and went on to capture the overall championship.

In 2009, the riders will return to the Stockyards with even bigger tricks and greater inspiration and an enthusiasm that can only be described as "Texas sized!"

Created back in 2001, the Red Bull X Fighters concerpt has grown to become the biggest and most respected freestyle motocross tour on the planet, featuring the world's best riders throwing down mad tricks in stunning locations across the globe. The 5 stop world tour that is scheduled to rock the USA, Canada, Mexico, Spain, and England in 2009 is the culmination of a truly unbelievable success story. It's going to be one hell of a season as the best riders in the world meet again at the Red Bull X Fighters to take FMX to the next level.
